This Town A Forest

On first observation you see another group of good looking lads with similar asymmetrical haircuts and blank expressions. You say: “Oh they must be another post-hardcore outfit with soaring vocals and dreamy electronics. Pass.”

Well, you most certainly shouldn’t pass, since these guys have definitely got some talent going for them, their recent EP Emerge holds a hefty 7 tracks of well structured songs that do take you to that sweet place where liquid ambrosia flows freely without any potential of a serious hangover.

HUMANS

All capitals, all class. Saw these guys play their first ‘official’ show in early April. And it was like I’d railed something euphoric. Mix some DFA 1979 along with the snarl you’d get from Garage bands such as The Vines, and you’ve got quite the party happening.

Apart From This are relatively new blood on the scene. With a nice demo and recently released EP complimenting their ace support slots for bands such as The Wonder Years and Fireworks, these guys have really, well, got it going on.

Expect sing alongs, whoa-oh’s and a lot of high fiving.

Expect them to play a whole lot more through 2011, even perhaps on some upcoming international support slots…

Gold Fields

5 - piece indie dance group from Ballarat. Along the same vein as Friendly Fires and Van She, their song Treehouse has been on constant play in my Itunes and Ipod since I acquired it not too long ago. The chorus soars and flows so nicely, everything around you suddenly starts moving in slow motion and you feel elated, at peace.

They’ve exploded on the local scene, already having played a few shows in the UK, and various festival sets coming up as well. Not bad for a band that was formed in the latter half of 2010. See them when you can, you will not be disappointed.

Six kids from Ballarat enter a competition looking for the best band made up entirely of kids in high school, in Australia. They win.

They lay waste whenever they play, no one is safe, not even themselves. Perhaps it’s just me but their music has got so much aggression behind it, it gives me the same feeling listening to Raised Fist gives me when I am in a bad mood. I want to run through walls, and just decimate everything around me.

In a lovely way of course.

Party. Basically this is what these guys make me want to do. 6-piece live hip-hop mixed with psychadelic explorations in sound that include some dabbling in loops leads the audience on quite the hectic journey. Frontman Adam Dynon performs with a fierce energy that doesn’t let up (he seriously doesn’t stand still for any point when they perform) and whilst the other members; Shaun, Daniel, Javed, Tom and Simon go to town on their instruments, you can’t help but get into the vibe and start dancing around like it’s the last party you’ll ever go to. But this is every time they play live. Never-ending party? I can deal with that.

Dance With Voices

As a bit of a blast from the past post, I remember seeing this band years and years ago when Click Click was in it’s heyday, and they rocked my world. Originally as a three-piece plus CDJ-1000 that played beats, their disco inspired tunes certainly got many-a-dancefloor pumping. Think; Cut Copy and the New Order had some fun in a hot tub and forgot a drummer. Though eventually, they did get a drummer, but then disappeared off the radar after having their music as the Big Brother Season I don’t really care soundtrack.

Don’t get me wrong, their Cold Colours EP is still awesome.

Tessa And The Typecast

Imagine the intricate pop-stylings of say Florence + The Machine and add an element of post-rock crescendo and we have Ballarat natives Tessa And The Typecast. Their single Painter has an urgent driving rhythm with elegant Cello and Piano flourishes with no prominent drum beat, yet you can still picture yourself flying through some sort of subspace highway, right into the world of Scott Pilgrim. But then again that’s just me. Get on it.

Originally from Queensland but now calling Melbourne home (yes!) Drunk Mums are a dance oriented garage machine. They all look like they’d be well at home in the world of The Mighty Boosh and the dual-attack vocals are reminiscent of Howlin’ Pete Almquist of The Hives fame. Plus they have a guy who plays the tambourine like there’s a party in there and everyone’s on Ecstasy. Party music at it’s finest.

A relatively new band (only formed this year 2010) The Magic Bones lie happily in the psychedelic community amongst newer bands spearheading the revival. Much like Redcoats with their stomping hooks, yet with a nicer soaring vocal courtesy of Dylan Thorpe, they have played to quite a few mesmerized audiences now, and even made the trip down to Adelaide to blow some minds. Perfect music to accompany a trip through a maze whilst your mind is lost in purple haze.
